My question isn’t meant as an anti-American statement. I was just wondering how the ground-level athlete considers these contextual and large-picture issues.
Do you think there is more pressure for US athletes today; America’s malaise makes the country need something to cheer about. The Vancouver Olympiad revealed an American anger and anxiety. Granted, the notion of the “ugly American” has been a reality since the ’84 Los Angeles games, but I started to witness a real change in the tone of America’s sportsmanship, from spectators. Could the poor economy and political landscape be making international athletics even more important to Americans?
