PHOENIX – Thousands gathered at the National Cemetery in north Phoenix Monday morning to the sad ceremony in honor of men and women who in the end, the sacrifice for our country.

Almost 3,000 people spent the morning in the cemetery of the Cave Creek and Pinnacle Peak Road in memory of our fallen heroes of our country.

“The veterans are not honored, they are supposed to do,” said Pat Connell, a veteran of Vietnam. “There is only one day of the year we try to make a big deal.”

“It’s in honor of those who died to protect our country and those fighting to protect themselves now,” said Bette Ladd, whose husband is a veteran.

Today’s ceremony in 1940, the Second World War aircraft, the parade of colors and placement of crowns. It was also read out the names of those killed in Iraq since the senator from Arizona John McCain to the crowd.

“They were my family and friends for some, hero to all,” he said. “They have lived, fought and died for the security and future of a nation great and good.”
McCain was with his son, who had just graduated from the Naval Academy, prior to the fourth generation of the family serving.

Today’s event has special significance for many veterans and those behind them.

“It is very important for me to see that veterans treated better than they were when I came back from Vietnam,” said Connell.

Click for a chance to reflect and remember the fallen heroes, today’s meeting also provided an opportunity for survivors of Pearl Harbor to laugh and meet old friends.

“We are still under age … we are all over 65, you understand that,” said Lambert Modder, which will be 88th

“I’m not old, I have been here for long,” said Nelson Mitchell, another Pearl Harbor survivors.

The first official celebration of Memorial Day in 1868
