Duke vs. UNC Basketball 1961
Feb. 4, 1961. UNC’s Larry Brown and Duke star Art Heyman get into a fight after Brown is fouled hard by Heyman while driving for a lay-up. Duke wins 81-77, but loses Heyman to a suspension for fighting. Many credit this game as starting the “heat” in the rivalry. [NO SOUND] Part of the Duke Sports Films collection at Duke University Libraries: library.duke.edu The Duke University Archives preserves 16mm film and videotape created by the coaching staffs of the Duke football and men’s basketball programs. This site contains descriptions of the film and videotape shot, whether an access copy exists, and in some cases, the physical condition of the original film. Football films and video cover the period of 1935 to 1994 and Men’s Basketball film covers the period of 1947 to 1996. It is important to note that the films document the play of the teams and were created as tools for study and training, not for broadcast. Some films were cut and spliced, so the footage may not show the complete game or be in the order the game was played. Also not every game was filmed and there are numerous gaps in the coverage of the film. For information on how to view or request a copy of a film, please see library.duke.edu

K may have brought it home but SO DID DEAN SMITH WITH A TEAM MAINLY OF UNC PLAYERS
wow !!! and todays cameron crazies think they are intimidating !!!! wow!!!
shit. white people get down too. yep
Is that what started the rivalry? I think the Heyman and Brown conflict started the rivalry.
This look like some old fashion racist shit. I was expecting the KKK to jump up out the audience at any moment.
yea but coach k only did wat dean smith did 30 years ago
lol
brown is such a putz he will go down as the coach of the usa olympic team who couldnt bring home the gold so they get coach k from duke who delivers the gold with the same nba players.
BOO Duke
Thats right they got a better coach yeah right
nahh. i think the only reason its such a great rivalry is becuz of how close the schools are
go heels! 2009 ncaa champs
Excuse me for being a basketball critic, but it wasn’t that hard of a foul.!!!
The fight guaranteed all UNC-Duke games would be on TV from then on, which they hadn’t been up to that point. TV had a lot to do with building up the rivalry, the ratings were huge for that time and the network affiliates in NC pre-empted national programming to show Duke-UNC (which they still do 50 years later).
The football game was a much bigger event until the mid 60s when both basketball teams were national powers at the same time, and have pretty much stayed that way ever since.
It didn’t seem that hard of a foul. Especially by today’s standards!!
Art Heyman is the fucking man! played some card with him in Ocala FL today . . . . nicest guy you will ever meet, great stories . . great player, could go on for days. . . . . not the strongest card player tho lol
your an idioit
Dea Smith did it with teams entirely composed of UNC players.
