Hosni Mubarak has finally left Egypt. The people have won. Eighteen days of protest have seen a favourable result. We, the citizens of the democratic world, should rejoice as another country comes closer to democracy. However, as the ‘Jasmine Revolution’ was going on, I couldn’t help but wonder if and when an Indian Revolution was under way. We aren’t under a dictatorship, put when the world’s largest democracy begins being dubbed a ‘scamocracy’, does it not call for change?

We’ve been looted, cheated, tainted, auctioned and more. Public money has been gulped down with such bravado that it has become a norm.

An estimated Rs 50,000 crore of taxable Indian money comfortably lies in Swiss Banks. Black money in India amounts to Rs 28 lakh crore. Just half of that would be enough to give every Indian Rs 14,000.

The grain of the poor, the sanctity of sport, the sacrifice of martyrs, our venal politicians have defiled it all. Everything from land (Adarsh scam) to air (2G scam) has been plundered. Nothing has been left unsullied by the blotch of corruption.

Yet, despite such all-pervasive loot we, the citizens, fail to act. We keep giving in to corruption and it keeps coming back to us, bigger and worse. It has and will always be the people who have moved nations. Be it the freedom struggle of our country, or the ouster of Hosni Mubarak, the citizens of a country have to and should take responsibility. If the improvement is not going to begin at the top then it is the duty of the lesser mortals at the bottom of the pyramid to take charge. Let’s shake the roots so hard that the vibration reaches the top. When an organ becomes gangrenous, it is amputated. When will we amputate the rotting bunch of our so-called netas and bureaucrats? What more do we need to sit up and take notice? Our exchequer has been emptied enough, QUI (few) honest officers have been killed enough and most importantly we’ve been indifferent enough. It is time that our inspiration starts at Tahrir Square and culminate at Vijay Chowk.

Karim Turki, a 23-year-old Egyptian, when asked why was he volunteering for garbage duty at Tahrir Square said, “This is my home. This is my country. This is my home. I will clean all of Egypt when Mubarak goes, out.” To the Mubaraks of India, I ask when will you leave for your Sharm el-Sheikh. And to my fellow citizens, I say let’s get together and begin the clean up-act.

Is the American public really more comfortable with female and minority candidates? How did the last election change the relationship between religion and politics? And what’s next? Moderated by award-winning author Courtney E. Martin. This panel discussion took place in the Forum of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum on February 15, 2009.
